Updated statement following firearm discharge in Frankley last night

West Midlands Police continues to co-operate with an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) after an armed officer shot a man in Birmingham last night (Wednesday 26 July).

An area of Hereford Close in Frankley was cordoned off following the shooting at around 9pm. A man in his early 40s suffered a gunshot injury and was taken to hospital; he is in a critical but stable condition.

One man – aged 21 – was arrested for suspected firearm offences. Two other men, aged 17 and 20, and a 53-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are being independently investigated by the IPCC. The officer’s body worn video was on at the time of the incident and this footage will be reviewed by the IPCC.

Superintendent Andy Parsons, from Birmingham Police, said: “A number of properties are being searched in connection with the ongoing police investigation and the subsequent arrests.

“There will continue to be a police presence in the local area to provide reassurance to our communities.”
