Two arrested after bikes stolen in dawn crime spree

Police have arrested a man and a woman this morning (Sunday 7 July) after off-road bikes were stolen in a ram-raid involving a van which had been car-jacked less than an hour earlier.

The crime spree began around 6am when a woman rode her bicycle across the path of a newspaper delivery driver in Umberslade Road, Selly Oak, causing him to brake suddenly. He was dragged from his vehicle by two men and assaulted rendering him unconscious before his van was stolen. He was taken to hospital with head injuries where he’s currently under observation.

The van was then used to ram the front of a motorcycle shop causing extensive damage on the Chester Road in Sutton Coldfield less than an hour later, where three off-road bikes were stolen.

Just before 7.30am police were alerted to disorder in Ivy Road, Stirchley where a group of men were causing a noise nuisance and arguing with neighbours. When officers arrived they found a man and a woman with two of the suspected stolen off-road bikes.

The 30-year-old man, from Wolverhampton, fled down an alleyway and after a short footchase was detained. The 37-year-old woman, from Birmingham, was also arrested at the scene and both remain in custody on suspicion of robbery and burglary while enquiries continue. The bikes and the stolen van have been recovered and will be forensically examined.
