Teenager arrested after loaded handgun recovered

UPDATE Sunday 13 August: A 17-year-old has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. He will appear at Birmingham Youth Court tomorrow (Monday 14 August).

A teenager has been arrested after gunshots were fired in the Ladywood area of Birmingham last night (Friday 11 August).

Police were called after members of the public reported a group of youths on Broadway Plaza and hearing shots fired just before midnight.

The 17-year-old was arrested following a short footchase after he was seen to discard something under a car as he made off. Officers recovered a loaded handgun.

The teenager remains in custody on suspicion of possession with intent to endanger life and will be questioned today.

Detective Inspector Jackie Nicholson, from force CID, said: "No-one has been injured and we do not believe that the shots were targeted at anyone, however it is alarming that a firearm is being used by teenagers.

"I would urge anyone with information about firearms to contact us.  These are deadly weapons and the consequence of even carrying a firearm is a lengthy jail sentence."

Information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
