Teen hurt in street shooting − police plea for info on gunman
A teenager was hurt in a suspected drive-by shooting in a residential Birmingham street − and police are appealing for information to help trace the gunman.
The 17-year-old was among a group understood to have been outside Teviot Tower in Mosborough Crescent, Hockley, at around 11.30pm on Tuesday night when a shot was fired from a passing car.
He suffered a gunshot wound to his ankle and is now recovering in hospital.
Witnesses have described seeing the car head towards Unett Street before making off.
West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Jim Colclough has urged anyone with information to get in touch − and reassured people that information can be passed to officers in confidence.
He added: “We’re looking at a firearms discharge at a crowd from a moving car… that bullet could have gone anywhere and it’s fortunate we’re not looking at a murder enquiry.
“There are families living in that area and a stray bullet could easily have ended up going through a window − I dread to think what could have happened.
“We urgently need to know who pulled the trigger and who was in that vehicle; we need to get these people off the streets. If anyone suspects who might be involved, perhaps they’ve heard something, I’d ask them to get in touch.
“They can call us in confidence, they don’t have to leave their name, or they can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously. We’re not interested who provides the information, we just want to trace this dangerous offender."
Detectives have conducted house-to-house enquiries and are currently sifting through CCTV footage in a bid to find out more about the attacker.
Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101 and ask to speak to the Investigations Team at Stechford police station.
Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be reached on 0800 555111.
