Police dig deep to help Sandwell schoolgirl’s charity fundraising

A local Sandwell schoolgirl and her mother have been applauded for their efforts in raising money for a cancer charity.

Two Sandwell PCSOs Gary Woodrow and Paul Evans met 11-year-old Ellie and her mum Louise while on patrol at the Yemeni Centre on Tildasley Street in West Bromwich at a club that is held for cancer survivors, patients and their families.

It came to their attention that the enthusiastic schoolgirl was regularly selling flowers and plants and then ploughing the profits back into the charity.

Ellie, from the Carter’s Green area, lost her grandmother to cancer in 2018 and set about finding a way to help other people who are affected by it. Last year, Ellie and her mum sold 527 plants and so far this year, they have already sold over 400 – equivalent to £540 worth of proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

As a thank you and to help them continue to grow the plants in their own garden, our Cannabis Disposal Team met with Ellie last month and promised to give her with some left over soil and small pots from seizures at various drugs busts.

On the day, Ellie was surprised to find that Cannabis Team Supervisor Michael Hall had brought along some extra gifts including gardening tools, a watering can and a gardening magazine.

Michael said: “We are always on the look-out for ways in which the items we seize during drug raids can be used for the better in our local communities.

“It was an absolute delight to meet Ellie and Louise and I feel so happy to see such positivity from people who want to make the world a better place in any way they can.”

Kind-hearted Ellie and Louise have decided to keep in touch with our Sandwell Partnerships team who set the whole meeting up and will now be painting the team a WMP bird house which will be placed in the backyard of West Bromwich police station, in honour of a police officer who sadly passed away.

Anyone who wishes to purchase some plants or flowers or donate any gardening items to Louise and Ellie’s garden is asked to email so arrangements can be made.
