Man jailed for attempted burglary in Handsworth
Paul Simpson has been jailed for three years after he was caught ’red-handed’ trying to break into a house in Handsworth last summer.
A woman saw Simpson acting suspiciously from her bedroom window on 31 July, and called us straightaway.
He was looking at her neighbour’s car, which she thought was strange. During the phone call, she told us he was trying to break into her neighbour’s home.
We sent our officers, and they arrived less than 15 minutes later.
They found Simpson trying to smash his way into a house on Booth Street with a garden spade. But when Simpson spotted us he jumped over garden fences to escape.
His dash for freedom ended when officers pulled him down from a fence and arrested him.
A screwdriver was found in his pocket, possibly one of the most common tools used by burglars to get into people’s homes.
Simpson was charged with attempted burglary, vehicle interference and going equipped. He was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday (9 January).
