Man charged with murder following house fire

A man has been charged with murder after a woman sadly died following a fire at her home in Balsall Heath last month.

Peggy Wright suffered serious injuries after jumping from a window to escape the fire in Lapworth Grove on Sunday, 18 April.

The 83-year-old was rushed to hospital but sadly died later that day and a murder investigation was launched.

A 52-year-old man was also taken to hospital with burns and continues to recover from his injuries.

Mark O’Brien, 46, and of no fixed address, is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court this afternoon (6 May) charged with murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

O’Brien is currently remanded and will appear at court via video-link.
