Chief Constable’s Awards for police volunteers’ CoVID relief efforts

We’ve presented awards to two Birmingham residents who helped with our CoVID-19 relief efforts last year – and showed themselves as standout citizens!

Matthew Bowater and Khallaq Ahmed were among 200 volunteers who worked alongside our Restorative Justice Team to distribute foods and essential supplies to people shielding across the city.

The pandemic paused the team’s ‘day job’ of running face-to-face meetings between victims and offenders in order to resolve low-level crime or anti-social behaviour.

So they set about recruiting a team of volunteers – ranging in age from 17- to 75-years-old – to collect more than five tonnes of food, sanitise packaging and distribute produce to food banks in Birmingham.

The amazing volunteers helped collect around 22,000 items of tinned and packaged food and distributed 1,900 bags of shopping to people across the city.

Matthew (42) and 41-year-old Khallaq were really active members of the team.

Matthew, from Sheldon, used his van to collect food donations from residents, churches and charities across the city; whenever there was an urgent request for drivers he was always first to reply.

Khallaq, from Aston, also collected food donations and approached the city’s warehouses and cash and carry centres to encourage them to make donations.

They are both genuinely selfless people who care about the community and do everything they can to help and support people.

And in acknowledgement of their efforts our Chief Constable Sir David Thompson presented them with Chief Constable’s Community Service Awards during a special ceremony earlier this month.
